Family Photos: Wedding Day Tips Part 3

February 26, 2025

Okay, family photos are something that I am actually very passionate about and I’ll tell you why! Of all of the parts of a wedding day, I feel as though family photos can often get overlooked as far as the thought that goes into it. It makes sense, because they seem pretty straightforward!

I love to really prioritize these. Being a photographer lets me preserve people’s memories for the rest of their lives which is so special! Having had several family members pass away since my wedding, I deeply cherish our family photos. It’s one of the only times your whole family is going to be together! So let’s capture it!!

Alright, I’ll get off my soapbox now. Here are my tips for this part of the day!

1. Make a List!

To me, this is one of the most important things to communicate with your photographer. It saves SO much time to have a detailed family photos list so the photographer (or their assistant) can call out the names quickly and easily. Making a list beforehand also ensures we don’t miss any of the important people or groupings who are there!

    2. Tell Your Family!

It may seem obvious, but sometimes we’re waiting on Uncle Billy to go get his drink because he didn’t realize he was in the family photos! It can be helpful to tell your family beforehand to stick around after the ceremony!

    3. Have Your Officiant Make an Announcement!

Trust me, people will want to come up to you and chat right after the ceremony. It is such a good idea to tell the officiant to make an announcement regarding family photos and cocktail hour! Just in case family or other guests aren’t sure what’s going on, it always helps to give a large group very clear directions.

Planning out family photos is definitely not the most glamorous part of the day, but I have found that when you put in even just a little extra effort, it saves everyone time and stress! Plus, I truly believe that these are photos which will be cherished forever, so why not make them go as smoothly as possible?
